Air is a homogeneous mixture and can be separated into its components by fractional distillation. The flow diagram (Fig. 2.11) shows the steps of the process.
The air is first compressed and cooled
by increasing pressure and decreasing temperature.
Due to this the air which is in the gaseous form is transformed
to liquid form as liquid air.
The transformed liquid air is then allowed to warm
up slowly in fractional distillation column.
